Japan Guide website is very good.
HND airport-to Tokyo easy by rail
Narita airport Longer - cheapest option is bus
Will you catch this offer of free flights?
No just outside the free flights offer. Sounds amazing.0

You can eat extremely cheaply and well from convenience stores. They even heat the food up for you. We loved a Family mart and Lawsons, lol.
Good to hear it was not so expensive.0

If you do travel by train you should use hyperdia.com to help plan. I found it an amazing resource.
I purchased a JR card and planned the trip in more detail than usual to make best use of it. This meant that it expired when we were in Nikko so we needed to pay for the train back to Tokyo. Rather than pay a small fortune for a Shinkansen we opted for a different train operator who were much cheaper (and decidedly slower).
We stayed in various accommodation types and I don’t have a favourite as such but I’m pleased that we used a ryokan for one night.
Can you tell me more about the ryokan and how you booked it please.0

I stayed in this ryokan, mainly because we wanted to experience the hot baths without having to share with strangers It was an amazing experience, though one night sleeping on a futon was enough. It was an amazing experience, though one night sleeping on a futon was enough.

This was a few years ago and my memory isn’t great but we stayed in a ryokan in the alps. I can try to find out more details when I have time but it was probably booked through one of the usual hotel booking sites.
This one had futon beds and an en suite toilet but washing was a communal affair. Men in one and women in the other. They swapped them round every day so you got to see both. Bathing in Japan is traditionally done naked in a group.
Breakfast was vast but I’m not a fan of Japanese food so didn’t eat anything.0
