Forget it. This sort of thing has always happened occasionally. They won't believe you. The only way to minimise the risk of this happening is have the cashier count it out in front of you before they hand it over. They don't keep track of serial numbers. You could ask if the branch's till balanced that night but on a till of tens of thousands of pounds a twenty-plus pound daily error is common, too.

Agreed password? Cashier giving out the money in an envelope without asking for ID? Can i just check this is a UK branch of HSBC we are talking about, not Bolivia?
By all means go ahead and check.

Not quite sure how you'll do that but good luck.

They got a loan from a relative.

The money is from their own loan with First Direct.

No wonder people get confused by your posts.....

Taking the envelope back that only has £4880 in is not going to prove anything.... Only the till balance will prove the error.

The money is from their own loan with First Direct. They took it out for a car. If they didn't turn up today to buy the car it was going to someone else. So they went on to go get it. As they're on a very long drive i'm on here trying to be a help to them and get answers so that when they land back they can have a better idea of how to proceed.

So wasn't the money used to buy the car then ?

Is that it? After all the comments and speculation can't you tell us a bit more than just 'problem solved'?
