Is my used car warranty still valid?

So I purchased a 4 year old Skoda Citigo about a year ago from the CarShop, along with a 36 Month warranty which was very expensive. I wish I hadn't paid that now but it was a very hard sell and my first car purchase.

Anyway, the warranty requires that you service your car "in accordance with the Manufacturer's recommendations" which in this case is 15,000 miles or 1 year. However looking at my service history, it hasn't been serviced for more than 2. I had assumed (or possibly been assured but I don't remember) at the time of purchase that it had been serviced just before being sold to us just under a year ago, but there's no record of that. Does that mean the warranty was even void at the time of purchase because it hadn't had a service within the previous year? If I get a full service now (within a year of purchase) will that mean the warranty is still valid?

I would rather not pay for a service if the warranty is void because I can get a relative to do it for free. I'm a bit confused so I hope someone can help!

Looking at the service history where? Your book or on the dealer network?

Sometimes they do not stamp the book but its registered on the system.

Imagine you are a used car salesman. No qualifications. No professional registration. The ONLY thing you have to do is SELL CARS. You will SAY ANYTHING to SELL CARS. The function of a used car warranty is to SELL CARS. They rarely pay out but they help USED CAR SALESMEN to SELL CARS. The warranty is supposed to give you peace of mind so you will BUY. Telling you it will be serviced before delivery will make you BUY. The salesman will have no power to have it serviced he will just tell you that it will be. Only later on people will find it hasn't been. You could try getting something back from the warranty but it will be difficult. If you know someone that can service cars they will probably do a much better job than a garage. The warranty is probably unlikely to pay out anyway. Everything is always 'wear and tear'.
  • It does not sound valid on what you say. Just get your friend to service...........

This bit is bob-on. But let's turn it around a bit...

Remember that a used-car warranty must be profitable for the warranty provider - else they wouldn't offer them.

That means that they pay out, on average, less than they receive in premiums - after deducting all their operating costs from the premium. Their payroll costs, office costs, marketing, commission for any intermediaries, tax, etc, etc. The remaining gap is their profit.

By buying one, you're gambling that the car you are buying is going to be far less reliable, and far more expensive than the average.

That said, if they're selling you a warranty on a used car, it really should only be sold with a car that meets the requirements for it to be valid. If it's provided as a blanket "All our cars, where eligible, come with a warranty" - that's different. Whether you have any traction with the vendor after a year is another question. If the warranty was demonstrably useless, then complain to them. Escalate internally. If you get nowhere, issue a letter before action stating that you'll launch a small claim if you do not get a refund.

Assuming that the car you were buying had been serviced to the correct intervals was the root cause of the problem, however. Always check. Certainly, any manufacturer warranty remaining would have been voided by a failure to do so - but for a car outside the manufacturer's warranty, it's down to whether you think that omission is fundamental or not. Certainly, it should be reflected in the price. No, you can't "make up for" previous omissions by servicing now - it's possible that the failure to service has already caused internal damage. Given the type of car we're talking about, I suspect the service wasn't late on mileage, but simply on time - in which case, I'd not be overly fussed, personally. But if it'd covered ~30k without an oil change...?

I would suggest that you contact the dealer and ask him to confirm warranty is / is not valid. Ask for a quote to service. Then you can make an informed decision.

Maybe at the time of purchase, the service wasn't due and it was shortly due after you bought it?

If you feel that you have been mis-sold car a warranty policy, contact Carshop and give them all the reasons for why you think the policy has been mis-sold and then they will investigate your concerns and issue you with a response.
Sounds like you may still be ok, if it was expensive, dont let it go.
