Opening a current account again after switch

I was wondering if anyone has tried opening a current account again with the same bank after switching. Rather than opening a donor account. I'm quite fond of metro, as has nice local branch, but hardly use it. Was going to switch to first direct for bonus but would quite like to keep metro too. So... switch from metro to F.D and then go back to branch in metro and say I want to open account again.

I have done this (with other banks, not metro) on at least a couple of occasions but there is no guarantee they will. Also for example Starling make you wait a year so worth checking if Metro have such a condition.

You don't switch banks, just an account. There's no need to wait for a switch to complete. You can also open a second Metro account, or an account at a different bank, and switch that one (after ensuring the new account has any required SOs or DDs).

EDIT: no need to go into a Metro shop these days to open a current account with them. Just do it online.

Out of idle curiosity the OP triggered me to look back to see if I had (re)opened a new CA with a bank that I had previously used an older CA for in a switch elsewhere. Seems I have done it twice with TSB, as I am now on CA #3 with them and similarly, twice with Halifax (although I currently have not applied for CA #3 with them). At no point with either bank was there an overlap in the sequential CA's!

I haven't (yet) had any problems re-opening accounts with banks whose CA's I have previously closed in switches elsewhere …. but it may only be a matter of time before some whizz-bang program spots a pattern and issues a "computer says no" response!

Colsten's post above may have shown me a better way to do future switch tarting :)

Starling Bank are known for rejecting new applications within 12 months of switching out. I am not aware of any others doing similar but that doesn't mean there aren't any. As so often, there's only one way to find out for certain.

A while ago I did a switch from the Co-operative Bank to Metro Bank, then a few weeks later remorsefully opened a new Co-operative Bank account and switched back. I had no problems and what was rather odd was that all my security information, online banking etc. was intact from the previous account. The account number was, of course, completely different and I was sent a new debit card and PIN. Rather strange, given I had no other Co-operative bank account open which would have maintained security information. I have now opened a new Metro Bank current account on the 'not all eggs in one basket' principle.
