If it really does boost the power by 100+ bhp then he it is likely he can play the "I had no idea" car

I would have thought it unlikely he could play the "I had no idea card" if the power was boosted by 100 BHP>
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • Unfortunately you need to be careful - a friend of mine had a rather large bump (injuries but no deaths) and the car was found to be remapped and with larger brakes etc.
Caused him no end of hassle.

I've found declared mods never to be a problem.
  • The insurance company will work on the balance of probability if they have tints, upgraded suspension, big wheels (all declared) then they will think why do all that on a bog standard car. The chances are the mods will go much deeper.

However if he was driving a bog standard car (visibly) I suspect they won't have given it a second thought as it is highly unlikely.
    I personally think that's unfair.
Obviously insurance companies wont give a damn what i think but that's just my view.

Having been a member of various car message boards over the years i know there can be various types of modding.
    * All out - looks and performance
    * Just looks. The car may be a crappy 1.2 slow as you like so they make it look like it should be faster than it is
    * Standard, but with performance mods
    * Rat look - car that looks like it's about to fall apart but is a beast under the bonnet. Typical 1.0l snail cars but with a different engine inside for example.

So just because it looks heavily modified doesn't necessarily mean the performance has been altered.

But at the same time i can understand an insurance company saying - we don't have time for all this modification lark, we'll just assume you've done the whole lot and know about it because it increases the chances of us voiding your insurance and we don't want to pay out anyway.

But it's not simply about pure performance mods. If appearance based mods have been made in a way that an insurer might deem the car to be a more attractive target for theft, then it will adjust its risk assessment likewise

    Alternatively more expensive to repair.

They may also conclude that the customer has more money than sense, and price accordingly.

    Not necessarily.

Your comment reminds me of someone on one of the car message boards i was on. His car was heavily modified in terms of looks on the exterior. Everything was declared.

He had a bump and they repaired the parts - with standard parts. He wasn't happy.

Probably cheaper than replacing to his modified spec though :)
  • Not necessarily.

19 posts we managed. A record possibly.

I think i'll pass on this bait. Thanks for the offer though.
