Hi,
After a refurbished laptop sub £200....bought a Lenovo Thinkpad last time that has lasted me nearly 3 years but the local electronics store want £66 to fix it (new battery and power port) so was thinking of just putting that towards a replacement.
looking at this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T440-Core-i5-4300U-1-90GHz-8GB-320GB-Office-Webcam-Laptop-CHEAP/372707280824
what's the deal with the promo code for £50 off? is that some kind of trick?
Anyway, any better options out there? (doesn't have to be a Lenovo)...just for internet, word, basic family use....

The promo code is
PREP2020
at the top, of the listing
Not a great screen , HDD not SSD but I haven't got enough time before dinner to look for better, someone somewhere may give a better choice.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Also just a quick note.
Myself, I would rather buy this one because it is the cheapest working one, the purchase a separate SSD (£25), and maybe a few extra quid for memory??? - for laptop tinkerers, but that might not be your priority. It also has no guarantee, but that model tends to be very reliable and it costs £119 to buy it now. I would take a gamble, but you may not want to. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T440-Win10PRO-Laptop-Intel-Core-i5-4300U-CPU-1-9GHz-8GB-500GB-H/264589058501?
This is the same as yours for £205, with 1 year warranty 8GB, 240GB SSD https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T440-Core-i5-4300U-1-90GHz-8GB-Ram-240GB-SSD-Windows-10-Laptop/153437534163? It could also be £180 with only 4Gb memory?
For £170 with 6 months warranty https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T440-Core-Intel-i5-4300U-1-9GHz-8GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-WiFi-Win10Pro/264576534257? Possibly the cheapest with an ssd and - no office - so another few quid for ebay, but the free LibreOffice works for most people including me at home. (if i was lazy this is the one I'd buy, but have not seen the pics...) However with £50 off from your pick, the difference is not that great.
the other thing... OFFICE? Libre office?, MS office 365?, or full fat MS Office - that is working, not a trial and licensed?
Edit: After doing a different search - No tinkering needed, but no warranty. It also has a crack on the top bezel of the keyboard, not a big issue to me, you might be different? For £130, is a good deal, but has a 12" display
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X240-Core-i5-4300U-1-9-GHz-8GB-256GB-SSD-Windows-10/114022108338?
And the ugly duckling for £190 with a 1920 x 1080 Matte screen. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-VOSTRO-15-LAPTOP-2018-CORE-i5-7200U-2-5GHz-4GB-500GB-15-6-GRADE-B-15778/164020573712? It's cpu is newer and is about 20% faster than any of the above, but will probably feel slower due to no ssd, and 4gb ram. 6 month warranty
I have had a basic look through, but you have to examine those picture, and write-up to see if anything is missing. The word 'untested' most likely means not working. If no psu is mentioned, you may have to buy one. Those pixels arn't dead, they are just resting
Before purchase of any laptop, make sure the bios is not passworded - ask the seller!0 -
this is all very helpful:T0

Though the faulty memory slot is a slight concern. Either way, one needs to keep an eye open for relative bargains.
