Cavity wall guarantee

We had a grant in 2005 for insulation with a 25yr guarantee by CIGA. The company who installed it are no longer trading. For the past couple of years we have noticed the house has been colder than it used to be ( I initially put it down to us getting older) but it is particularly noticable in the living room. Someone told me that some companies chasing government grants cut corners and didnt insulate properly. Because I cant chase the company, I rang CIGA who told me that the guarantee only covers poor material or workmanship, but how do I determine this? Theyve told me to write in “ and they will look into it” but it hasn't filled me with confidence. Is the only forward, an independent assessment.

Get an inspection camera and look in the cavity and see what's there.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • Don't do the above - It'll invalidate your Warranty!!

There are 3 things you can do - cheapest to more expensive.

    1. Wait for and chase CIGA to send someone out to look at the property.
    2. Invest in a Protometer, check around the house and see if there is moisture in the walls (that would cause the damp)
    3. Obtain your own report from a Surveyor.

There is a 4th option, however I wouldn't recommend, and that is get a solicitor to deal with your claim. the reason I would not recommend this is because the company is no longer trading, therefore they will not have Professional Indemnity Insurance. They would take your case on, go to court, win (as there is no-one to defend the defunct company) and you would end up with no one to pay the solicitors bill except yourself (they advertise no win no fee - but you will have won!) they will take your house of you*
