I believe that 'hard' does not refer to difficulty, but to whether the search will appear in your credit history, as seen by 3rd party searches. 'Soft' searches are seen only by you, and the party requesting the search.
This may be so - but in Credit Karma, there is no distinction between what only I and the searcher can see, and what all searchers can see.

Going back to the subject of this thread:

It is impossible to tell from Credit Karma whether Starling do hard or soft searches, as all 3rd party searches are listed together, and you can't tell which can be seen by other 3rd parties.

It is also impossible to tell from Clearscore whether they do, as they don't use Equifax.

I am interested to know how people can claim that Starling doesn't do hard searches, based on the information they see in their credit files. What tools are they using?

The difference used to be shown in Noddle, before it changed. It's no longer obvious, but the ones labelled 'credit checking application' will be 'hard' searches.

I don't see any "Checking Credit Application" for Starling in my Credit Karma. Are you saying that this is proof that Starling don't do hard checks? I.e. that the only checks other searchers can see are those marked "Checking Credit Application"? If so, how do you know this?

Also, do you know what the difference between "Checking Credit Application" and "AF" searches is?

I admit to not currently being familiar with most of the agencies bar one, which is Experian, which I've used before to check my credit file.
On Experians site, it states the difference between a hard and soft search, and I would think that that information will apply cross the board with the other agencies, otherwise the whole system wouldn't make sense, but perhaps each agency show the information differently?
  • Mine was a hard search but I opened GBP and EURO accounts, plus asked for a OD.
