£450 seems an unusual amount for this.

A thermostat housing and possibly a fan temperature sensor will be nowhere near that amount.

Overheated and caused damage to the head will cost two or three times that amount but you might as well get the belts changed at the same time.

I think the quote includes timing belt, given the disassembly required to get to it, mechanic suggests doing the cambelt as well.

I have a friend who needed around £500 worth of repairs on his very reliable car so he traded it in for a newer one. The newer one has been in and out of the garage and has spent over 6 weeks undergoing repairs in total.
But then who knows how much the old one would have cost over the same period if he had kept it.
  • Thanks for the replies all!

It is a toss up between repairing this one and getting a much newer car/upgrade. However I don't drive very often so it's a hard choice either way.

I appreciate all the feedback. I think I will be likely to get the repairs done.
