A New Year, A New Start

Options
Things have changed dramatically since I started my last diary, so I thought I'd jump on this opportunity to start afresh.

Major changes:
  • My OH has moved in with me and we have semi-combined finances
  • I am finally about to exchange on my very own tiny flat
  • I am quitting my awful job today!

Lots of upcoming expenses and shaking-up of my finances ahead!

    Some quick information
    • My new job will be paying me £7,411 more per annum than I'm currently being paid (take home £350 more each month), increasing by another £6,289 after one year. I'll be starting my new job in the middle of March but will start the new budget in the beginning of April. I also get flexitime and potentially overtime!
    • I expect to complete on my flat in the next month and will have to finally cough up my £20,000 deposit.
    • My OH will finish paying me back at the end of February, and that will mark the first time since the beginning of our relationship 4(!) years ago that he will not owe me any money. He currently owes £400.
    • I currently owe £7,500 to my parents to repay my postgraduate qualification fees. I also need to save £20,000 to pass on the deposit funds for another lucky family member in the future.
    • My mortgage will be £112,000. It's shared ownership so I'll have to pay rent as well. It'll be more than I pay right now, but well worth it for a place of my own.

A few money related jobs to do and done today:
    • Claim refund for a family member's broken laptop within warranty that's gone months without being repaired. Done: £242 claimed, will give this to my mum since she paid a large chunk for the replacement. Also got a £50 goodwill gesture which I'll keep since I dealt with the whole thing
    • Return 4 parcels. Done - should get £80 back on my credit card
    • Organise my Monzo pots - I've found it really helpful for keeping an eye on my various savings for annual expenses, and not overspend, especially for booking holidays...
    • Claim back £23 expense from new job....already accruing expenses and not even started yet! Email sent - just need their response
    • Actually quit my current job - feeling nervous! I DID IT!!!!

  • Happy new diary, exciting times ahead. Good luck!
  • Thank you all! :):):)

A kind-of MSE but also not MSE thing happened today.

My sister desperately needs a new phone after she gave her good phone to our mum, and took our mum's old, rubbish phone that keeps running out of battery after 10 minutes.

My phone contract expires in September but I figured out it would actually be cheaper for me to upgrade my phone early (lower contract price) and then sell her my current phone, which is a 2 month old iPhone, for £100 :rotfl: my phone company will pay out the remainder of my contract without charging me for it.

So now I've upgraded my phone and my monthly payment is now £12 less, and my sister has a new phone.

Only downside (and the non-MSE aspect) is I'm now tied in for another 2 years, but that doesn't really bother me, realistically I would have probably got a new contract once mine had expired, anyway.

Also, I could have sold my phone back to my phone company/other phone buying companies for £320, so technically I'm making a £220 loss by selling it to my sister. The things we do for family!

I can't decide if this is a win or not!

  • I'd call that a win for the kindness factor to your Sister, she will really appreciate it.

That's a nice way of looking at it and makes me sound more generous than I am...I like it :p
