Hi Balabooberlies, yes I am indeed the voucher fairy! So lovely to hear there are other voucher fairies doing the rounds. Hope you got that warm glow from saving someone money.

Returning to the saucepan topic, I would recommend getting ones with a screwed-on handle, rather than a riveted-on one. Then you can tighten it up if it works loose.
Another connected MS tip: in Wilko they sell a set of 3 stainless steel pan dividers. They are triangular baskets with holes in, which you can put inside a big 20" saucepan to divide it into 2 or 3 sections, a bit like a pie chart IYSWIM. These get used daily in our house as we both like different veg. Means I can cook carrots for me, peas for us both and sweetcorn for OH in one pan. Just put the 3 baskets in pan at the start and add veg so all ready at same time. Saved on both gas and washing up! Wish I'd discovered them years ago.
As a bonus they also come in handy to separate eg chips and sausages in the air fryer.
  • +1 for stainless steel. I bought a set from John Lewis (Jonelle) at least 20 years ago, and they still look good as new, despite being used most days, and being washed up in the dishwasher. As PP said, even if something sticks/burns it will come off - my go-to trick is boiling rhubarb leaves!

Just looked and these look identical to mine: https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-classic-saucepan-set-3-piece/p2647369

I have three saucepans, a frying pan with a lid and a casserole/stock pot. Was a significant investment at the time, think they were just over £100 in total - would be more than double that now.

I have various pans from various places. I recommend Ikea for some stuff, their roasting tins [ stainless steel] are really good. I also buy non stick pans from there, nice handles, holes in the lids, if you use a silicone spoon with then, they won't scratch.

I get mine wherever I find them, I went to italy recently [ I buy a lot from there] and got two shallow iron pans with soft touch handles either side for cooking chicken pieces, or fajitas etc. They're standing up quite well to what I've thrown at them so far. I did buy a spaghetti pan [ with the sieve inside] but find you need a lot more water and it's easier to tip the pasta into a colander rather than use that.

I would also recommend buying some sillicone spoons, I find them much better than wooden ones, they don't burn, you can leave them in the pan and they scrape evey last bit out. I got mine from the What shop, they were 89p each and very good value [they are all sillicone, not wooden with a sillicone tip]. I even bought some for all my friends! They were bemused but greatful...:)

I need new saucepans as my Le Cre*set are getting too heavy for me now :( This has spurred me on to start investigating - so I will bite the bullet when we get back from our winter sun holiday

and another vote for stainless steel.
Today I set a pair of eggs to hard boil... and they did, so much so that I hard boiled the pan! (I forgot all about them!) A nicely charred interior, but a soak and a whizz round with a s/s scrubbie and the pan is almost as good as new. I'm thinking a quick clean with Astonish paste will finish the job!

In the past I have burned enamel pans, and sadly they never seem to completely recover.

Another vote for prestige stainless steel, mine are coming up to 22 years, the larger ones are feeling a little heavy for me when full, but I've never had so much as a loose handle, I've dropped them multiple times and not so much as a dent.

Judge Vista draining lid pans. Ten years and as good as ever. Very happy with them.

Also happy that I skipped the non stick and went for pans I could scrub if needed. The non stick frying pan Judge vista didn’t last as long as these have.

We had some lovely Le Creuset pans as a wedding present, but as you say they are very heavy. I also found that they stuck (probably user error!), and took quite a lot of scouring to get back. I also managed to char the wooden handle on one. All in all, style over practicality, for me at least.
