Hello,

Recently moved into a new house which has Eon gas and electricity meters. Called Eon the day after we moved in to set up an account and they asked me to email proof of the date we moved in and they would set my account up so after the call ended I emailed a copy of my tenancy agreement.

A week and a half later after no further contact with Eon I came home from work to find they had forced entry and replaced the electricity meter with a prepayment meter and left a letter to advise this was due to debt on the account, clearly this was for the previous occupier and the letter was addressed to this person.

I called Eon and spoke to 4 different people and none of them could explain why this had happened. Finally got put through to the complaints team who apologised and said they hadn’t got to my email with proof of address in time. They offered me a written apology and £40 ‘Goodwill’ in compensation which is an insult and I declined, they sent me a deadlock letter and I have now raised it with the ombudsman.

Just wanted to ask if anyone has had anything similar happen to them and what the outcome was?

Thanks :)

The ombudsman will probably raise the £40 to £50
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Which one - Eon or the Ombudsman ?

  • Someone from the ombudsman liaison team at Eon called me and offered me £230, I declined and asked for more so they are going to call me back tomorrow.

Not sure whether to accept the offer they give tomorrow or if it’s worth waiting on the ombudsman?

Hi dinks90. Fwiw, that's roughly double the highest compensation I have ever had for one incident but mine was for one really terrible phone call. Your situation is much worse: They broke into your house; burglars do that. I'd be looking for at least a 4 figure sum but do not know how realistic that is.

Whatever happens, I wish you luck and hope you will update us. I switched to Eon in July purely on price; so far, with the notable exception of the reps on here, they suck.
