  • So for more description of the house. Its a 2 up 2 down.
Knocked through lounge (so we are heating lounge, dining room and kitchen all in one)
    Chimneys capped internally.
    No cavity solid brick walls.
    Walls are rendered externally.
Located in Hertfordshire, (so not experiencing arctic winters)
  • yes the house is old - its circa 1915

Have you got insulation in the loft?
    If so what thickness?

Does the house feel cold or is it possible to heat it to a reasonable temperature and keep it there?
  • there is a small conservatory off the kitchen which has been knocked through to. we changed the roof on the conservatory and all the windows last year thinking that would help but maybe thats losing a lot of heat.

If we have a normal week we can heat it to a comfortable temperature in the evenings.

If we have been away for a week with the heating off, it takes a long time for it to feel warm again.

Looking at my heating control app right now whilst I am out and the heating has been off since 8am its showing that the temperature inside has dropped to 16 degrees from 18 degrees when I left this morning.

No idea about loft insulation, its previously been converted so has a floor in place with carpet, and the depth between the ceiling and the floor of the loft opening is between 250-300mm deep from memory. We removed the stairs and closed the loft hatch so we can just use it as storage. So do not treat it as a usable room.

You're really doing quite well to get your gas usage down to only 16,300kWh p.a. !

It doesn't sound like you are losing loads of heat then, although it isn't exactly cold outside at the moment.

You are just dealing with an old house and old construction techniques which did not reduce heat loss as much as modern day techniques.

You gas consumption is probably about right for a house of that type.
