Big bill from Utilita and not sure what to do?

Dear all

I have been a bit lazy in keeping upto speed on the Eversmart issue and failed to get a closing balance from them before their website shut down. I managed to switch provider in October and have been paying a new provider a monthly direct debit.

Now I have received a bill for roughly £270 from September 18th until 19th November.

I have no idea if I was in credit with Eversmart(I am assuming so as I was overpaying in summer the same amount as winter roughly over £100).

I have also started paying the new provider from October and so it feels like I have been paying every month and now to receive the bill with out any clarity on how much I have used and how I should be charged with out any meter readings properly taken(again I assumed with the smart installation- that the meter reading is being done at the supplier's end).

Anyway, its all a mess and I am sure I am partly to blame not keeping an eye on things. How do I resolve the Eversmart bills and usage for the time I was with them?

Thank you for any advice/ help.

Regards

Eversamrt customers were swapped over to Octopus, so why have you got a big bill from Utilita. Did you swap from Octopus to Utilita

If you didn't read your meters or check and download your bills when Eversmart went belly up and didn't give the info to Octopus then you really dont know whether you were in credit or debit when ES went bust, likewise you dont know how much energy you got from Octopus before you swapped to Utilita (assuming that's what you did).

TBH you aren't partly to blame, but wholly to blame because you now appear to be several months and two suppliers down the line and you really dont have a clue how much you owe (or were owed by Eversmart), It's unclear whether you communicated with Octopus and then seemed to jump to Utilita and don't appear to have kept any bills or records to help you sort it out.

Have you any historical ACTUAL (not estimated) meter readings or bills to see where you stood - without something to help you work out what went on and when you are probably stuffed.

Perhaps you should put a bit more effort in in the future so you dont get caught out again

Eversmart were transferred to Utilita. Iresa went to Octopus (who received £13.2M from OFGEM for doing so ).

Apologies, you are correct - I went the Iresa, Octopus, Eversmart and now Symbio. It all worked out pretty smoothly because I kept records and ensured that I read the meters and kept them notified.

I didn;t actually get transferred to Utilita because I'd left Eversmart about a week before they died, but it was Utilita whohave just paid me the £135 that I was in credit from Eversmart.

It can all work out but it does help if the the customer is the ball if they want to avoid aggro

  • Thank you both. Yes I didn't keep the records as you both have done- but was wondering what will be my right to get the details held under Eversmart and Utilita account- if anyone has experience of obtaining them to verify.
    Thanks again.

You probably have a right but it's pretty difficult to get bills and stuff when the old firm has closed down and possibly closed the on-line accounts.

Trying to get copies of old bills may not be easy depending on who owns them now, that's why it's so important to download and save your own copies of bills and statements when they are issued or to download as much as you can before the on-line account gets shut down.

All you can do is ask them what data still exists and request copies, but as Eversmart is defunct you will either need to ask Utilita or the receiver.

It's not clear how or what data gets transferred from the defunct company to the SoLR and I guess it depends on how good the records were when the company went under.
