Social housing 'should' be removed from the corruption of local government control altogether, then we might see changes.
So you're saying that things are better in areas where there is no social housing provided by the local council? That's an odd statement...
The London Borough's of Bexley and Bromley and Merton and Richmond all sold their housing. Are you suggesting that they have no housing issues? Oh wait, it appears on the basis of all the available evidence, that its the lack of local authority controlled housing thats causing these problems. Housing sold so that the better off can keep on being better off, and stuff the poor vulnerable, eh? Gosh, you're just overflowing with the milk and honey of human kindness, aren't you!
Over 100 councils nationally have sold/transferred their housing stock, perusing some daft ill-informed right-wing political dogma. The kind you espouse... Oh dear! Much of London, and many other areas have become places only for the wealthy to live. Housing Benefit no longer covers the rents, and what social housing that is available to rent at social levels is almost now exclusively in poorer regions/areas because of right to buy. But its also what the people of the UK keep voting for....
To answer the question however, if the person can't afford the rent, they should apply for Housing Benefit (and council tax benefit), or the housing costs element of Universal Credit...

She should have a lease which stipulates the maximum annual rent increases. This scenario does sound very unlikely; a solicitor would surely have picked up unrestricted rent increases or irregular rent clauses?0 -

I have a shared ownership property and the rent increases are capped at RPI + 1% in the lease so would be very surprised to see an increase in the rental part of 50% by any Housing Association.
Lets hope the information is incorrect in this case.

You have completely misunderstood what gomer was saying. He never said that things are better in areas where there is no social housing provided by the local council. gomer was saying that social housing should not be under the control of local government where instead of the revenue generated by social rents being funnelled back into social housing it is spent on other things.0 -

Actually, many and indeed most joint ownership schemes are outside the scope of the rent freeze/increases that apply to social tenants.Your landlord might choose to adhere to it, but if they do, its for their internal reasons only, not because of the law...
Check with the company you are leasing off, it will have a different company/charity number from the one used to rent to social tenants. So I guess you get to count yourself one of the lucky ones...0 -
