First time taxing car messup - am I due a whopping fine?!

First off I'm going to put my hands up and say that I know this is my mistake and that I've messed up. I'm just looking for next steps.

So I passed my driving test late last year and was bought a car as a gift from someone I'm not in touch with anymore. I didn't realise that the tax ran out early December until this week and I've been desperately trying to get it sorted. The person that bought the car for me used a business address instead of my home address so I haven't recieved any of the letters that the DVLA have said I should recieve so I honestly didn't know that tax was due or that it even needed to be actively done every year rather than rolling on of it's own accord.

I've spent today trying to get it sorted (very stressy) and the only paperwork that I have due to the car having been a gift is the New Keepers Details V5C/2 slip AND because it has the wrong address (which I didn't realise until I started digging) attached to it I have to go through a paperwork process that can take 6 weeks before I can tax the car.

I can't be without a car for 6 weeks. I live in rural Devon, there is no public transport that can get me to my job. And am I due a massive fine for my screw up? What on earth do I do next?!

Thank you.

I'm interested in who buys a car late last year and then isn't in touch anymore.

So why did you not update the owner details when you were given the new keepers slip?

So did this generous person tax the car for you?
Just when was it given to you?

    An ex?

OP - is the car registered in your name to this other address? The registered keeper is the person legally responsible.

Right now, it's only a month overdue. That's unlikely to trigger anything in itself - but now we've moved into another month, the computer may start to get interested. If the car's spotted, then you may get stopped or it'll be clamped.

You use form V62 to get a replacement V5C, and you can tax it at the same time.

If the car is your name, phone DVLA 0300 790 6802 and explain, they may tax it over the phone for you.

Save the call. They'll say to apply for a new V5C using V62, and to tax it via that route.

The tax isn’t going to run out in early December. It’s either the 30th November or 31st December - so you may only be a couple of days late.
