Lost Car Key advice

Lost Car keys!!
Please help someone this has really ruined our Christmas. My other half has lost his Volvo car keys/fob on Christmas day, we have turned up the house and can't find, also can't find spare key! We aren't sure of they are in the car but can't see them (maybe be in a bag)
Car Locksmith is £450 and going to dealer will also cost about the same. We aren't rich people and this cost would seriously make January a huge struggle for us
and kids 😢 to be honest the car is probably not worth £500 so we were wondering if we signed up to RAC and paid for their Car key replacement add on...could we claim straight away to get someone out to open the car and do a new key if the key isn't inside? We have had a few people try and break in to it but no luck being a Volvo it's very secure.
Please help 😔🙏

Bet a used door window glass isn't going to be expensive...

Don't you think that is dishonest?

How did you manage to lock the car without the key? Does it lock automatically if left open? Just trying to workout how the key could be inside.

    Had similar issue here today
Son locked house and car keys in boot ( Ford Fiesta 07 vintage )
After looking at options, a used side window was going to be the cheapest
So thats the route we took
Harder to break than it looks though !

One press on an automatic centre punch and that window is history.

As an example, on my previous car the passenger door open sensor did not work. After unlocking if no door is opened it closed after some time. So open, chuck keys in passenger door, wait would work in that case.

(of course it would have be possible to do it accidentatly to if you opened to get something and dropped them)

Though I go with OH having the spare on keys on their keyring so they are far apart (and the non remote if there is one, well away, safe or whatever storage place you have).

Still on cars without a third (say non remote spare), that can be an issue when they take your keys and theirs! Had to "Work From Home" unexpectadly once for that, still work were fine!

I'd say it needs a bit of thought.

Does the car automatically lock itself? If not, then how can the key be in the car? If the key isn't in the car, isn't the cost of a locksmith redundant? When you say going to the dealer, do you mean to get a new key?

If so, I'd take that route - guaranteed solution rather than just probable.

If you're going to break in through the glass, just be ready to disconnect the battery quickstyle and have the repair guy on hand (unless you have a secure garage to store the vehicle until its repaired).

I'd also say about the rac....if you're going to be upfront with them and they're willing to cover then sure. If you're intending to/will have to lie to them to be covered then that would be fraud. Fraud is a serious offence and particularly when of a financial nature (such as breakdown cover, which is classed as insurance), it can have some severe long term consequences if discovered. Could be as small as higher insurance quotes. Could be jail time and/or limited job opportunities. People sometimes don't realise the extent their actions can have.

ETA: On looking at their T&C's, you can't make a claim within 14 days of the start of your policy and they won't provide a replacement within the first 3 days after the date of loss. So looks like you'd be waiting a minimum of 14 days even if they agreed to provide cover based on the correct dates.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • Depending on the vintage of Volvo, a replacement key will be about £250 from a main dealer if you have the V5C / identification. Get some quotes from a few car locksmith places, but chances are if its a Volvo it will need main dealer software even the older ones, to code it to the car. Generic stuff doesn't always work with Volvos

And RAC and AA cannot successfully every type of car - they can't get into Mercedes. I had to get Mercedes themselves out when I locked the keys in the boot. My Mazda won't lock if it senses the keys are in the car
  • Some places offer break down cover even after you've broken down so possibly could cover this. So not really dishonest.
