Balance transfer mistake

I did a balance transfer just before Christmas from amex to an M&S card with 0% interest on balance transfers. I made a huge mistake and entered the wrong card details on the card I was transferring from.

After speaking to M&S they have said the account details I put in doesn't seem to exist. The balance hasn't cleared from the account details I used. Despite this M&S are struggling to reverse the balance transfer and I have taken on £990 more extra debt by inputting the wrong details on the transfer.

My question - will M&S eventually be able to reverse and fix this mistake or will I be stuck with nearly £1000 of debt I didnt incur/spend myself all because of a mistake?

    It'll sort itself out.
  • If the real card number you typed in exists then they have had a free balance transfer - yes you will be expected to pay this UNTIL they can sort it out.

If it does not exist, how can it hold a balance to transfer across to your M&S card?

Or am I missing something here?

In any event, hope you get it resolved soon.

Presumably payments are placed in a collection account at Amex, from where they're allocated to a specific card using its unique card number as the reference.

Yep. Why is there a extra £1K of debt?

As you said it was your mistake.
Have you contacted Amex re this?
