Unable to switch to EON- don't know why

Hi there

Hoping someone can help me! Tried a few weeks ago to switch to EOn from EDF energy to supply a holiday chalet. Heard nothing so rang up to find out what was going on. The lady I spoke to told me that there was a problem finding the property on the database which seemed odd because EDF energy are supplying it quite happily.

I was told to speak to Royal Mail and the District Council. Having emailed them both and talked it over with them I concluded that I did not want to register the property on the Royal Mail database. Very few of the chalets on the site are registered in this way because it means that you would then have to have a mail box and have deliveries (not much use if you are renting out). It costs you money to register as well. Also it is odd that none of the other properties on the holiday site have a problem getting their energy supply, including mine with EDF. I don't want the property on the Royal mail database- just for EOn to be able to "find " it.

Ringing and chatting online with EON got me nowhere as I get the impression that the people I communicate with are reading from a script and I don't think understand the issue fully. Nor do I to be honest which is why I'm hoping that some clever people on here can help me! It may be that EON are different to everyone else but that seems unlikely.

I'm really desperate to switch now because EDf have put their prices up and of course I had assumed until recently that this wouldn't apply to me because the switch was in progress.

Any help gratefully received!

I imagine the reason Eon cannot "find" this property on their database is entirely because it is not registered with Royal Mail's. That is how it used to work in telecoms; somehow I doubt the energy business is any different.

Have you tried asking EDF how they supplied it in the first place?
  • Hi and thanks for reply!

I haven't tried EDF (though will try). I know my sister also has a chalet in the same place switched from NPower to Shell Energy and didn't have an issue with either supplier. She has never been registered with Royal Mail for the same reason I don't want to.

Hopefully EDF will tell me something helpful like "they need to use the xxx database rather than the Royal Mail one" or "we just add unlisted properties to the data base manually". I'll give it a try- thanks!

Also just spotted that EDF have a new deal which when you take cashback into account (switching to same supplier how good is that!) isn't that far off the EOn deal. So if i don't get anywhere I might just stick where I am and give myself an easy life.

    Thanks again for responding

I doubt that you'll get cashback if you are an existing customer.

Have you tried switching to the second cheapest supplier instead?

Hello THALERIE and I'm sorry you're finding it difficult to switch to us.

I suspect the problem here is with the national databases that hold details of all the energy meters in the country. All suppliers use these databases when putting through a switch and the smallest of discrepancies will cause a move to be blocked.

National energy databases can only be amended by the existing supplier. Please ask EDF to do this for you. Even if you decide against switching to us, it will help if you want to move to another supplier in the future.

Our advisor will have mentioned the Royal Mail as the national databases use addresses held by them as the basis for their records.

Hope this explains THALERIE and sorry again you weren't able to switch to us at the first attempt.

Is it true Eon are no longer paying the CEC to offer cashback to those who want to switch to them?

No. I am still offered £25 to switch to E.ON.

Hello Smodlet and a Happy New Year.

Not heard this. As SpanishBlue says, the offer's still there for those switching to us from another supplier through the CEC on a relevant tariff.

Thank you, Malc, and a Happy New Year to you and to Helena...

I still have not figured out how to post pics but this link from the CEC shows "Cashback £0" next to the first Eon entry; you have to scroll down three or four pages to find it.

Admittedly, the CEC is not known for its accuracy these days, or so I find. I refer to the need (or lack thereof) to have smart meters on various tariffs among other things.
