Re: Default on credit report

Options
Hi All,

I have just discovered that I have 2 defaults on my Experian credit report both from British Gas, one for gas and one for the electric although I only had one dual fuel account.

I switched from them to another supplier in June 2018 and have always paid on time. I queried a bill they sent in June after leaving as I had always been in credit, I sent a letter with the meter readings as of change of supplier and asked for them to confirm that the bill had been calculated correctly. After receiving nothing back I thought no more of it and the only reason I am aware was whilst looking at new mortgage deals as ours is coming to an end.

I have just had a long conversation with BG and the customer advisor said it had been written off as 2 bills had been produced in error, he has said that they will reopen the file and report this to credit reference agencies but will take 10days to do?

My question is will this be updated and my credit score improved or will it be on my report for 6 years?

  • If they remove the defaults then they won't show anymore.

Your credit score may drop but that doesn't matter. It'll be as if the defaults were never there.

    Thanks for reply,

I've never missed a payment on anything yet my credit score is sitting at very poor on Experian, hopefully this will rectify the situation.

It may not change the score. - although if it does, it's more likely to drop further - but that's not important. It's not a factor used in credit assessment. Some people's score just stay permanently low.

The other thing I noticed was a red box referring to electoral roll, it says I have lived at my current address for 10 years and on electoral register but above it says 'Confirmed at present' NO...?
  • No one sees the score but you so don't fret over it

I'm on the electoral roll in my married name, and most of my financial life is under my maiden name. Experian picked it up, but I had to push hard to get Creditkarma (under their previous name) to accept and link, inc offering to involve the ICO if it wasn't updated.

Could that be a factor here?

Good luck and keep us posted Humdinger
