Thanks for all your help so far guys.

    I have 2 options i am considering.

I am either going to fix a block of wood to the wall to rest the weight of the cabinet on, the wood will be drilled into the studs.

Or my alternative is cutting away the plasterboard and fixing wood between the studs, if i do this, how do i fix the wood batten to the studs? Just a couple of corner brackets?

Diagonal screws would be the simplest.

I don't see who you are making this so complicated? Surely some 18mm ply will fit flush behind the cabinet? Screw that into the studs, through the plasterboard, and fix the cabinet to that. Job done, and minimum making good if you ever remove the cabinet.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

If i fix wood to the plasterboard it will overhand the cabinet as the studs are 600mm wide and not where i want the cabinet, the cabinet would then sit too proud of the wall leaving a good inch gap which would frankly look ridiculous.

    How wide is the cabinet?

Look i can give you dimensions and all sorts but i know it will sit proud of the wall if i just fit a batten on top of the plasterboard, the edges of the cabinet are lipped compared to where the holes on the cabinet are, so it will sit away from the wall.

In that case, I guess your solution is the one. How good is your plastering?

Is there at least one stud behind the cabinet that's all you need.?

If not it is less than 600mm wide what is in it that weighs 40kg and how far does it stick out.
