I am fairly sure that you need a NW account of some description to qualify for the CC
I'm fairly sure that there have been times when my CC was the only product I held with NW. Of course T&Cs change over time, so what was true then might not be true now.

    Thank you for your replies.

I use the Clarity card for all my spending and clear it each month so don't need that but a nice suggestion for anyone needing it, thank you Katiehound.

    Hmmm, 18cc that's a bit worrying, wet fish, yuck!

Thanks for your contribution Eco Miser.

    All the best,

Nationwide have changed their credit card offering. It says it is now only available to Members to apply for, holding another credit card doesn’t qualify for membership (and in any case they now bar you from holding more than one NW CC). I haven’t checked what happens if you close other accounts but still hold a CC. Only benefit over a clarity card is the short 0% period.

No Cashback on this one (but I think they removed it from the old Select card anyway unless you already held the card).

The only bonus, and it is a small one, is that I have a NW credit card which pays £0 .05 (1/2p) in the pound on all UK purchasing transactions.
It is also commission free for purchases abroad- so that is my back up when overseas.

I have also kept my old NW credit card but it is only used for purchases abroad and online purchases that are not in £. The cashback rate dropped from 0.5% to 0.25% in January 2018 by which time I had already switched to using a NatWest Reward card for day to day use. The NW cashback only applies to puchases in £ so I don't earn any cashback from the card.

Trouble with switching is all those other accounts that have the N/W c/a listed as the 'linked account'. They all have to be manually changed.

Plus the salary/pension provders have to be informed.

The switching process is fine for DDs and SOs (though I'd also double check them all) but there's always more to it than that.
  • I keep mine open as it's my oldest current account. It'll have been going for 19 years this year. I just leave it, doesn't harm anything.

Have finally checked with NW CC.

Correct- it's 1/4p in the £ cashback and you do have to keep a 'main bank account' with them to earn the cashback (not the Flex a/c). Cashback not available to new customers

Now the decision is whether to switch a/c & earn £100 & lose the interest from CC (£55 cashback just awarded) or stay put!
Since the 5% RS gone might be time to move on........

Not strictly true. A FlexAccount alone won't qualify, but a flex account seeing monthly credits or switched into etc counts as a main account. Speaking from experience of being a Select plus a FlexAccount customer.

    Erm.. didn't switch into
It definitely didn't mention FlexAccount on the web page.
My plan was to open FlexAccount and then switch the FlexDirect away. It could have a bit of money bouncing around! An SO in, and then one going out!

Or now wondering if I could open a FlexAccount & switch that away....
or maybe just open a basic TSB as a donor- don't need any SOs orDDs

Any linked accounts should be auto switched as well (at least that's the case with Marcus) and updating incoming payments from salary/pension are covered by CASS. From their website: "Your new bank will have transferred all of your regular incoming payments (such as your salary or benefits) and outgoing payments (such as Direct Debits, standing orders, future dated payments and bill payments) to your new account, along with any remaining credit balance. Your saved Payee details will also be transferred over."
