I think the IBM x31 & x32 are unsung wonders... if you can accept 2nd hand then how about http://www.gumtree.com/london/02/15280602.html - not sure if this is your 2nd or your only machine.

I would go for the small Toshiba models, which are better built. I have the U200 and have not had any problems with it. PC World is actually cheaper than dabs, the Toshiba U300 is £50 cheaper than the Samsung at dab.com, but weighs the same, similar spec and has a 13" screen

If you're looking for really light and portable (and cheap) you could consider the Asus Eee, £220 and the size of a hardback book. It comes with a version of Linux installed but you can put XP on (it will soon be available t buy with XP as well). They seem to be getting very good reviews. A lot depends on what you want to do with the laptop though.

I want something which is mobile I can take to do presentations, research, work, internet, etc. I dont use anything for heavy graphics but would like something which will last, hence why i was looking at Core 2 Duo

I want an un-portable laptop.

Has the "Cheapest Decent Laptop" sticky joined the other "invisible" stickies?

Yes, I am grumpy this morning.

Well, nemo101 did say "something light and mobile"

Oh, and here's a tip: standard laptops are too large to open comfortably on the usual plane or train seat, due to lid size. Only the 12" ones are comfy.

Makes my job of catching 3Tonnes of concrete in a skip hanging from a tower crane while it's raining and blowing a gale seem quite mundane.
