Unpaid cheque

Paid a cheque in for £2000 on Friday using the self service machine at Halifax. Said the funds will be available at the end of today. I checked my account ealier online and it said "unpaid cheque -£2000 Unset"

Does this mean the cheque bounced? The person who gave me the cheque assures me he has enough in his account and i double checked the cheque to confirm all was correct. Going to have to ring the bank first thing tomorrow.

Only thing i can think is the cheque book is 5 years old. Not sure if that effects anything. Account details are still the same

Yes it looks like the cheque is unpaid - could be a variety of reasons - probably unable to verify signature would be my favourite, give the drawer your sort code and account number and get him to send you the funds by faster payment.
Your letter with a copy of the cheque will follow shortly from your bank.

Rang the bank. They could see the cheque on screen and couldnt see any obvious reasons why it bounced.

My uncle doesnt use online or telephone banking (hes abit old school like that). If i just give him my account and sort code on abit of paper, can he transfer it in branch?

Got a letter today. Was quick. Lot of technical jargon on there but it says the bank where the cheque originates from want ID of the account owner before they can process it. Bit odd seeing as its a Halifax to Halifax account.

Surely the whole point of a cheque is you dont need to present ID of the person who wrote it?

He did say the bank account doesnt have his middle name on it, but he signed the cheque with the initial of his middle name. Could that be the discrepancy that they require further ID?

Im just going to send him my account details and he says he will go in branch and do a transfer.

My uncle also got a letter today which we have managed to figure it out.

His bank account is registered with his middle name. For some reason his cheque book has his middle name missing. So signing for a cheque with his middle name seems to have confused them.

Ultimately its the banks fault for issuing a cheque book in the "wrong" name. Hes now asked for one with his middle name on it as per his account
