Is there any chance of getting your new employer to convert the relocation allowance into a contribution to your commuting expenses or to pay for occasional overnight stays in London?

I agree with the others that buying somewhere nearer work does not make sense until or unless you can persuade your other half that moving would be a good idea. Have you tried looking together at places between your current house and London?

If your wife needs to be within as reasonable distance from family that could work, if she needs to make daily visits she is right to stay where you are.
