Should I replace gearbox?

Options
I bought a second hand car about 2 months ago. It had been driving fine until yesterday when it wouldn't go into reverse. I've had a mechanic out who has said it is the gearbox and would be at least £300 to replace with a 2nd hand one.

It is worth it or should I just cut my losses? I only paid £500 for the car, it has nearly 100k on the clock.

(I'm a student so have limited funds)

Did he actually check or just assume?

It could potentially be linkage which is a much cheaper job.

It would be a common approach to running a banger that it would be better to get as much as you can from it and buy another £500 car with a years MOT on it, rather than spend a lot on this one.

How much MOT is on the car, what make model year is it? How good is the car otherwise?
  • Me personally, I wouldn’t bother. I know of people who would but asking what I think - I think I wouldn’t bother.

If you’d had it years and years and knew the car inside out and it had proved to be very reliable then it may be a different matter but you’ve had it 5mins. Who knows what may go next.

I’d just replace. Sure you may get another car with a gearbox that goes and people here at that price range will probably give you horror stories but still, id replace.
