  • who are debt free direct? Is that a free organisation which helps you or do you have to pay them.

I use CAP (christians against poverty - dont be put off by the name, you dont have to be a christian) and they offer a councilling support service in way of a person who will come and meet with you as regularly as you need. They run client events, holidays etc and can link you into other organisations/people who can assist with practial needs. All this for free!!!!!

Give them a phone or take a look at their website. It might be they can help you even further and you can take advantage of additional support.

www.capuk.org or 01274 760720 (they will call you back)

CCCS and Payplan can do the same and allow an extra 10% to your creditors...

If she's on an IVA then no matter who she goes to there will be fees, it's part and parcel of the arrangement. And if she's already on an IVA then it will be difficult to go to CCCS or PayPlan as they can't help her whilst she's paying her IVA.

The only way to get out of the IVA would be to default and stop paying which is a seriously bad idea.

How about some hampers as presents? I made "night in kits" one year for all my in-laws when I was skint. I used a box that held reams of A4 paper, and put in things like a bag of tortilla chips, a salsa dip, a bottle of wine, some popcorn, some sweets....it's easy to make it look impressive without spending too much.

As a bit of a joke I also put a dvd from the pound shop in. They went down very well, and it saves you from having to buy a present each - you could make one "night in kit" per couple.

  • I did joke "open only in emergency" kits when I was really broke.

    Men got:
    • a !!!!!! mag (actually it was just the enticing cover I'd put together from pictures off the net & printed - when they cut the sellotape at the side to open it, inside was a copy of the Lord's Prayer & pictures of old men gurning :D),
    • a picture of a clock - the hours on the clock were replaced with things like "time to pick up the kids o'clock" & "time to put the washing on o'clock",
    • maps to Sainsbury's & of their own kitchen with red arrows to the cooker,
    • a list of all the important family dates,
    • 10 reasons why they shouldn't complain when their partner says they've GOT to have a manicure/haircut/night out, &
    • a map to a woman's erogenous zones, with explanations.
    Women got:
    • 3 unopened Tampax, a small bar of chocolate & a pack of Ibuprofen,
    • an IOU for babysitting,
    • a list of 10 shops that usually have great sales with the approximate dates,
    • maps to local pubs/bars their partners might be in with the phone numbers,
    • a cd compilation of music by their favourite bands,
    • tweezers & a small handbag mirror,
    • a small book on DIY for beginners,
    • & details of the local locksmith or lock supplier if they ever wanted to change the locks on the front door temporarily. :D
What I couldn't get from Poundland or other cheapy shops, I made up myself. I started planning them in the September & I reckon each one didn't cost more than £4. :)
