OK, I've bought a crap phone, Nokia 1 Plus. It was only supposed to be temporary until my current contract runs out in June.

It is advertised as 8GB storage but up to 128GB with SD card so I bought a £10 32GB SD card. The problem is, I have installed 3 apps and there is no option to transfer them to the SD card and I now can't install any more apps as the internal memory is at 98%, even though there is 32GB just sitting there to be used :(

I have looked through the storage settings of the phone (Android Pie - Go edition) and there is no option to format the card as internal. Just an option to format as portable storage.

Is there anything I am missing? Or am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy yet another phone!?

Thanks

  • install the app App Manager III (AppMgrIII) from the playstore and that will determine what apps can be moved to the card.

apps like facebook and twitter that use a lot of storage can be moved over. the only issue you may have is everytime there is an update to a 'moved' app it will reinstall (or try to) back onto internal memory and then you need to move it to the SD card again (and each time thereafter.

There's a three dots option top right when you click on the SD card, you should be able to format it as internal in there.

However I believe Android will not present the "format as internal storage" option if it thinks the provided SD card is not fast enough to cope. A relative has this phone and it can do the "internal storage" thing - I know because I set it up :)

What £10 SD card did you buy? I suspect it may not be a class 10 one.

Thanks. It's a SanDisk Ultra 32GB. It has a 10 in a circle on it so is this class 10?

I originally stuck an old sd card in and it said that it was not fast enough so I put the SanDisk in instead. Perhaps I should do a factory reset or something? Not an issue to do as I only have my maximum storage of three apps currently installed!!

I should say that I did initially set it up as 'phone storage'. The problem is that none of the apps give me the option to transfer, except facebook. This includes google sheets and a couple of banking apps. So as I need these, I can't seem to install any other apps without deleting one.

Not all apps are movable no mater what you try. Banking apps (I think) have to live on main memory to work.

Yes I agree. A 'smart' phone nowadays with 8GB storage is not really usable

We made a similar rookie error when purchasing a couple of Lenovos a few years back, finding that apps, generally, MUST run on the main memory, not on the expanded memory of the SD card.

Find something with 32Gb and you'll be fine

That's as I understand it how some (maybe all) Nokia's work
My Nokia 6.1 is the same - format as external only - not internal. (though I'm not bothered/affected by this restriction personally).
