Move electric meter outside?

Hi.

I’m in the process of getting quotes for an internal non supporting wall to be removed. The electric meter and the fuse box are on this wall so I will need them moved. The meter & fuse box are on the internal wall in the corner next to the outside wall so I was wondering if the meter could be moved outside and still have the fuse box inside? It would not need to be moved far at all, just the other side of the external wall however.. the meter is at ceiling height.
Has anyone done this and if so what was the cost? I think the meter has to be moved by the electricity supplier and the fuse box moved by an electrician? Any thoughts on ease/price for this would be very much appreciated. I’m currently with Outfox the market but my deal has come to an end so I could move suppliers if required.
Many thanks.

Electric meter boxes being outside is not unusual so that can be done. Moving a fuse board (distribution panel) is not a simple job as it's probable that cabling will have to be extended and/or shortened. I can't estimate the price but it's potentially not cheap.

Don't be surprised to pay £1000 to move the meter.

Probably £700 to move a consumer unit, with an upgrade at the same time. If the electrician has to undertake earth and gas bonding to comply, add maybe another £200

My understanding is that the DNO will not move the meter unless the house has been fully safety tested
We had our meter and consumer unit moved 10 feet further into the house and upgraded a while back

It cost £1000 for the meter move and £800 for the Consumer unit so your prices are bang on.
DNO should come out and quote for free
You may need to pay DNO to move supply and Your electricity supplier to move the meter We did not pay the supplier as we had a horrid old disk/dial meter and they upgraded for free
  • Hi has anyone had their Electric Meter moved whilst in lock down? we need ours moved for an extension, moving box approx 1 meter but our supplier isn't booking people in at the moment due to corona so think our only option is to find a new energy supplier, if anyone knows of which suppliers are still doing meter moves?

Your meter will be moved by your local distribution company - not your current supplier.  The distribution company is the same, regardless of supplier, they have responsibility for all the cabling and substations everywhere within your region.  As an example, for me living in the North West, its this lot that do it: https://www.enwl.co.uk/get-connected/changing-your-supply/.  They moved my meter five years ago.  Took two of them about 20 minutes, then sat in the van drinking tea for about an hour before moving off to the next job.  Cost me £400 - they actually misquoted me, should have been double that, but the guy that came and assessed the job said it was expensive enough and didn't correct it!

Check the cable run length between the new meter box and the fuse box (consumer unit).  Most DNOs specify a maximum of 3 metres, though for some it's 2.5 metres.
If you're getting someone other than the DNO to fit the exterior meter box, make sure it's done exactly to the DNO's standards.  You don't want them to turn up, tell you it's wrong, and walk away again.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
