A lot will depend on {in the long term} just what you are planning as smart bulbs are just the start of a long road..lol.
If your are looking to expand into smart plugs ect I would suggest Philips Hue but to get the full use with smart home tech you need with them a Hue bridge.
Other than that just go for smart wifi bulbs such as Kasa smart bulb by TP link on Amazon {those do not require a hub and are dimmable

TP-Link bulbs all work well. I actually use them with Google home (They do work with Alexa) and they haven't missed a beat since installing.

As an alternative to replacing bulbs I have used these fitted behind the normal light switch:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/DENGHENG-Sonoff-Switch-Remote-Control/dp/B07X7M6CD5/
You obviously need room in the back box and they also need a neutral wire so not compatible with a switch which just has a live wire. The normal switch can remain and will toggle on/off.
They also have a timer so I have replaced the heating switch with one as well.

Then for table lights I use these:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Smart-WIFI-Plug-Socket-Power-Switch-APP-Remote-Control-Timer-UK-Home-Automation/392329706261?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=661328906331&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Both work well with the echo dot / Alexa app and at about £7 each possibly one of the cheaper solutions.

With the Hue, do i just need to buy a ‘starter’ kit that includes a ‘bridge’ ? Is it then fairly straightforward to set up?
