Reversed into me in carpark - then weirdness

Options
So today, I reversing out of a carpark space at my local Tesco. I saw the guy reversing across from me and stopped. And at this point I pulled slowly back into my space. I was stationary and sticking out of my space by about 1 foot, I think he then slipped on the accelerateor and he reversed into me at speed.

Both him and his son got out of the car, I also had passengers. But he was extremely dismissive. Cycled through a range of reasons, such as not seen me, then said he thought I'd stopped. But the real issue I had was getting him to give me his details - which he eventually did. He really didn't want to go through the insurance, and after exchanging insurance details rang me about home again, saying lets not go through insurance.

I asked him if there was a reason and he didn't give me one. He also was switching back and forth between accepting liability and then not. Generally the guy was totally weird and I've reported the incident to my insurance but I'm nervous about a 50:50 policy claim.

Any help would be much appreciated. Matt

Check on askMID that he has insurance at all.
  • Yeah the car is insured. Just got a feeling like it might not be him on the insurance. Guess time will tell.
  • Leave it to your insurer to deal with, it's what you pay them to do. Be warned that in the absence of dash cam footage or independent witnesses, it will probably end up being 50:50, assuming he blames you and you blame him.

So understand, whether you pay a policy or not, if the holders are not going to adopt some responsibility eg reverse into a space (bollards or not the tailgate still opens) then the companies can quickly and cheaply administer the claim with a 50/50.

Check with Tesco - there may be CCTV footage.

Details exchanged and no one was injured so the Police wouldn't be interested.
