Smets Meters ..?

Hi,

We have Smets1 meters installed by Eon about 2-3 years ago.

Now looking to switch to a better tariff with Edf, but they say they cannot electronically read our Eon Smets1 meters, so it will need new ones installing, as its a condition of their tariff that smart meters be fitted.

However, unable to get any precise info if they will be Smets 1 or 2, plus not sure what the current state of Smets2 meters are as seem to remember some recent press about them not being as "compatible between providers" as they reckon... ??

Just seems such a waste etc if switching means we have to have new meter to gain a new tariff, plus not being sure if they will need to be changed yet again should we wish to change in the future.

All for saving by switching but seems the few pounds we save hardly make up for the trouble of new meters again ....

Are you sure? I think you'll find that the Ts &Cs only state that you agree to be contacted about them, so you can refuse. However, you'll no doubt be bombarded with endless emails, calls and texts incorrectly stating that you've agreed; just tell E.On to cease and desist and then ignore them.

Update: Whoops - didn't spot the EdF reference. It's E.On who state that you only agree to be contacted about them. Time to visit Specsavers again... dunce.gif
  • Most of the Big6 are [recent] on mandatory contract smets, if you want a decent tariff. This in addition to the ofgem cap change.

SP as one example have no decent tariff without a prior agreement on a smets in your home.

I'm area code 15 for example and there's no COMMS system up and running and obviously almost zero installers needed in this area. Check your own area code and DNO.

Smart meter roll-out problems and delays...

    Best of luck.

    Hi,

Yes its very clear, even highlighted in the MSE comparison site.

"Important: You'll need to have smart meters (one for gas, one for elec) installed. If you don't get them within three months of switching, EDF says it will move you on to its standard tariff and charge you the £35/fuel exit fees. If you can't get them for technical reasons, you can stay on the tariff."

Thought we would just loose the function of the internal display unit, and they could still get our Smets 1 meter readings remotely but seems not so.

As Richie just mentions, seems other suppliers also have the same conditions, expect its to meet the Smets installation targets etc, regardless of their true functionality !

Then you will have to decide what's more important - cheap tariff + getting SMETs2 upgrade or more expensive tariff + keep your existing meters. In majority of cases, new meters fitted by the big 6 providers these days are SMETs2 type.

I'm in North Scotland and got SMETs2 meters fitted last week through E.ON, though for some reason the gas meter has stopped communicating with the electric meter - I suspect its lost its pairing. Anyway E.On have arranged to send an Engineer out to investigate, hopefully they can be paired again!
