MS One Drive Query

New laptop. HP 250 G7 Notebook PC. Bought due to MS update goosing my old one. Rant!!!!! But that is an old story, so I move on …….
On setting it up I allowed One Drive to remain (didn't actually understand what it was and how it worked)and my files have now synced to there. Already in a position when I have exceeded the free 5GB.
Seems the only option is to subscribe to Office 365 to get extra storage space. Don't really want to do this as I am happy with Libra Office for my use. £79.99 a year was not something I expected to have to pay.
Not very computer savvy and wondering how I could take all my files back from One Drive and stop it resyncing. If that makes sense. Would need to be a simple process or It may be beyond me.
I would then go back to my old method of backing up to an external hard drive.

Go into the One Drive folders and delete any files/folders you don't need to backup until you get below the 5GB. You only really need photos/videos and documents backed up. You may find photos going back years in the camera roll folder.0

2. create a new folder called NOTonedrive and copy all your onedrive files to it; when happy that you've got everything delete the ondrive folder0 -

I would keep onedrive but only use it for docs. My 30 years of docs only take up 5.41gb of space. You can uncheck the folders in OneDrive settings.
