I have received in the post today a letter from my bank saying that a cheque from the Halifax for over £1000 has been Refer to Drawer. I have contacted Halifax, they say this is happening a lot and we’re of no help. Can anybody offer any advice please. Thank you.

That is strange. Refer to drawer usually means lack of funds. A stopped cheque would normally say "payment countermanded by order of drawer".I have contacted Halifax, they say this is happening a lot and we’re of no help.
Only they can tell you that.0 -
They said they were going to contact the ‘payments department’ but would not give me their phone number or email address... said they didn’t have one!0

TELL EVERYBODY
HALIFAX BANK OF SCOTLAND HAS NO MONEY!!!
Because if they had they wouldn't have their cheques returned "Refer to Drawer"If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
OP Did the name of your account match the one on the cheque?
Do you have a middle name for example?0 -
All details on cheque were correct.0

I'm certain there is much more to this than the OP is telling us.
Why has the Bank sent you a cheque for £1K in first place OP?
Has the Bank stopped the cheque for some reason?0 -
The cheque was for a successful PPI Claim and on contacting the Halifax, they did not know why the cheque was stopped and could offer no explanation. The payments department were supposed to contact me yesterday, I still await their call.0

A cheque which is stopped is "Payment Countermanded by Drawer" (or similar) rather than "Refer to Drawer". As Halifax is a bank and therefore presumably issues its own cheques, either reason for return is odd to say the least. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

I'm guessing the OP is either a Bankrupt or has outstanding debt with this lender......0

No, I am NOT A BANKRUPT, never have been and am not in debt to the Halifax. The crux of the tale is that the Halifax are useless and their Helpline even worse, it has now been 3 days and I have had no response.0
