Thanks, but I don't think I should rely on that. She can't apply until she's actually in the UK, and apparently it can take up to 2mos to get an appt and get the ni number.
Given that she is a British citizen, I think you are looking for excuses why she can't apply for an NI number from wherever she happens to be in the world right now. You should be worried if anyone in the UK would employ/exploit her without having at least proof that she has applied for her NI number.

Best of both worlds, eh, US AND British citizenship. :D :T
Yeah, lovely, isn't it, to have US citizenship. Means you are allowed to pay tax in the US for the rest of your life, regardless of where in the world you decide to work/settle.

If she is only going to be here for the summer, perhaps you could arrange for her wages to be paid into your friend's account, and they could give her cash?

Alternatively, look for a savings account that accepts BACS credits and allows cash withdrawals through an ATM. Yorkshire BS might be suitable.

    Good choice or Coventry BS

She was not born in the UK. She has British citizenship by descent.

Oh that is going to make it such fun opening a account....

Just make sure that she is upfront and declares she is a USA citizen. FATCA ( 2010 Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act )

TBH. unless she is planning staying in the UK for more than the summer. Getting any wages paid into the friends bank account would be the best & easiest option.
    Life in the slow lane

Mobile-only banks such as Starling Bank, Monzo, require the applicant's address only for card delivery, no proof of address needed.
This can't be correct surely? Are you suggesting that they don't carry out KYC checks and will just accept an address without any verification?

Very good point, I hadn't thought of that. An American friend of mine, with dual US/UK citizenship, who has been living in the UK for over 3 decades has been having no end of difficulties opening any accounts with UK banks and Building Societies since FATCA came into being.

I often read about Starling etc not performing any even basic checks. I don't believe that is true. Starling even mention on their website that they will "carry out some quick checks at a UK Credit Reference Agency". In my own case, I have 6 searches from Starling on one of my CR files, on 2 consecutive working days. On each day, there
are 3 types of searches - a Quotation Search, an AML search, and an AF search. No idea what the latter is, and I am not sure what the Quotation searches are about as I didn't ask them to quote for anything, and didn't request any overdraft, either.
  • Did you even read what I wrote Colsten (I'd quote it but my browser keeps erroring out)? She CANNOT APPLY UNTIL SHE'S IN THE UK. According to, ya know, the government. Plus, you are legally permitted to work prior to receiving your ni number as long as you're entitled to work in the UK.
  • Thanks for your help everyone. Got some good options now.

No need to shout - and apologies for trying to help. I won't do it again.
