How long will Windows 10 take to download and install?

Hi I have bought my son a gaming pc, ready built but it didn’t come with an operating system. So I have bought a Downloadable version of Windows 10.
How long will this take to install and will it be straight forward?
Just thinking I may need to ensure this is done ready for him to open on Christmas Day!

  • Im not techy but from memory it took an hour or 2 for us to do a laptop last year. Ive got 2 more this year and a nintendo switch which will need games downloading onto. I am absolutely dreading christmas day when they're all gonna be restless and the already slow wifi is gonna be jammed. I would set them all up before bit as they're new i want them to get them as new in the boxes not unpacked and set up by me lol.

Well we’ve wrapped everything now but realised that not even having Windows running will/could take a long time to sort on Christmas Day. I can use my existing keyboard, mouse and monitor just to install windows but need to get my son out of the way while I sort it! I’m annoyed at myself for only thinking about this now lol!

I recall a couple of hours for a working system. then further random hours of adding bits of software I forgot & findng settings I'd forgotten how to change!

You could download to a bootable usb stick in readiness to save some time
  • I think if you had the option to purchase pre-installed Windows, it might have been less trouble for you.

However Windows 10 should not take too long to download with most internet connections in this day and age. I would allow for an hour to download and copy on to a USB stick and another 30 minutes to install Windows 10.

As you have purchased a gaming PC, you will probably see the most optimum performance from it by installing the required drivers, such as video drivers from AMD or Nvidia. There may be other drivers required, so do let us know if so.

In order to properly help you, we would benefit from the make and model of the gaming PC, or perhaps a link to the one you purchased.
  • Just my idea, but if it was built how did they check it works?
They may have sold it with Windows installed but not activated, but hey I am often wrong, but where did you buy it from and does it have a drivers DVD in the box?

Yes it does seem odd not to have an OS pre installed on a machine that probably cost nearly £1K. I would let him have it today on the premise that he just sets it up today and not plays on it till tomorrow.

If you have a memory stick then you can use the windows download tool to download it and copy it to the memory stick now so it's all ready to go.

If it a decent memory stick then on a decent computer with it can take less than 10 minutes to install windows 10.

But don't forget you then need to install drivers, download game clients, download games etc. So any head start you can get will be good.

unless Microsoft have changed how they deliver windows, you don't have to hunt around for drivers (unless you're playing a game released in the last couple of weeks in which case you may need the latest Nvidia/amd software). And getting games clients and games is ...a job for the ...gamer. not his dad :-)
ps. If W10 isn't installed yet, wrap a usb stick up and stick a bow on it... With the W10 key printed on a label.

A bit late to recommend anything now but I think it might be worth letting him do it his self so he will learn how to do it. The drive will be empty so nothing to lose if it goes wrong. Then you/your partner can help him.

Personally I would of given him a pile of PC parts and told him to build it himself. That would of kept him quiet for the next few days. ;) The pixies/fairies/elves & parents could do some of it after he went to bed. ;)
  • Around 1-2 hours, that should depend on the network and hardware state.
The read and write speed of disk affect the efficient a lot. (SSD moves faster, and HDD is almost the same).
Suppose you upgrade win10 in official method. And you have downloaded all installation files and ready to switch. It may cost you 0.5~1hours. During the process, your computer may restart many times. So, better to keep a stable net connection.
