Do I have the right to complain?

Options
Hi,

Just over a year ago I opened a business current account through Natwest. When I opened the accound I got given the option of having a credit card with the bundle - I didnt really want it but as it was free for the first year I thought I may as well have it. I was told that it would be free for the first year and then after that they would charge a subscription of £25 per year after that.

Anyway, I got the card, Ive never used it, its never even been activated, it still has all the stickers on it so it definetly never been used.

Then, last week I got a statement through from them with a balance of £25 for the subscription - am I right to be annoyed that they took the subscription without contacting me, especially as its never been activated, and would I be within my rights to refuse to pay it and ask for a refund?

Im sure their terms and conditions state that they can do it but it does seem unethical.

Thanks for your help,

Why is it unethical to charge you for something that was quite clearly explained to you?

If you are in business, I would hope that you can keep track of your financial affairs, and therefore would know to cancel the card.
    Gone ... or have I?

Same as #1. You may be annoyed, but you were told that you would have to pay a subscription. You should have refused it in the first place if you didn't need it.
  • Thats what I thought, hence why I asked here first before I phoned them. Obviously with hindsight the sensible thing would have been to turn it down from the beginning but when you start up a business you dont know what your cashflow is going to be like so its good to have something as a backup incase something goes wrong.

You are tackling this from the wrong angle. Do you have the right to "complain"? No, you don't as others have explained. Do you have the right to politely ask if they would consider removing the charge because you have never used the card and don't need it? Yes, of course you can ask and I'd give you a 50/50 chance of them removing the charge and closing the card down for you ... providing you do it politely and make the point that you never needed and have never used the card.
