Is it beneficial to put myself on my parents car insurance even if I won't be driving?

Options
I've currently got a couple of years left of my degree and I won't be driving during that time. Is it worth putting myself on my parents car insurance for a short period of time to build a no claims bonus etc.? Does that even work? Would just a day a year be enough or does it need to be longer periods?

Thanks I'm advance.

Just to be clear I can drive but I've never been on an insurance plan before.

  • Unless their insurance company give named drivers their own NCB you won't really see a benefit.

Just having spent all morning getting quotes, unless you will have been a named driver on their policy for a few years there is no point. All of the comparisons I have done today have taken into account that I have been a named driver for many years but I have zero NCD.
It may well put your parents' premium up if you are added as an inexperienced driver.

Most insurers only provide a no claims bonus for the policyholder.

A few do offer a named driver no claims discount, but this is not the same as a regular no claims discount - usually it will only be accepted by the company who offered it, so it will only help if that company is reasonably cheap for you to begin with. In order to build up a named driver NCD you would have to be listed on the policy for a whole year - the of day is not sufficient.

Given that adding a young driver to your parents policy is likely to increase their premium significantly I would think it very unlikely that it would be worth that amount of money now in order to get a smallish discount off what may not be a very competitive quote in a couple of years time. There's no harm in getting a quote and doing the sums though.
