Hi there
I have windows xp on this PC and my Daughter has a pc which is playing up so my question is can you uninstall everything and then use this XP disc to go on her PC or do we need a new disc for her ? The disc was bought from ebay and is genuine one.
also how much (ish) would I be looking at to get someone to set her PC up so we both can use internet at the same time. We have the gear to do it but to be honest its way over our heads and we need someone to actually install it blah blah
Thanks very much

License wise, you need one license per machine.
You don't necessarily need a new disk but you do need a new license
If you have xp home you can purchase one on line and install using that new product key and your disk
Cost of networking, wireless or wired, what equipment have you already got?
EDIT
Just been looking at M$online price, talk about ripoff, buy an OEM disk from ebuyer, at least you get a disk0 -
What OS is on your daughters PC, if it is also XP (same version) then you can use the CD legally, as they both have a license. If not follow RREs advice above.
Assuming you have a router for your broadband connection, the cheapest way is connect the both PCs to the router using ethernet cables (couple of pound each). Enter a couple of settings in the network control panel, and it's all up and running.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
We have D_Link ADSL Router, but seriously its way over our head :rotfl: :rotfl:
The other pc has windows 98 on but its been having a few probs. My Brother reckons it needs throwing in the bin lol but before we throw in the bin thought re installing everything might be a better option

Has your daughters PC got at least 256Mb RAM, or preferably more? If not, then to be honest it wouldn't be economically viable to try and upgrade it to what is required by XP0

Agree with RRE, there are plenty of decent cheap fast laptops about, have a look at Dell, much cheaper than trying to upgrade a machine made for Windows 98, it's be hideously slow on XP, and impossible on Vista.
Is your main PC connected to the router with a network (Ethernet) cable?
It's pretty easy to do if it's connected in that way, just copying a few simple settings.0 -
Ah right, so maybe we need to have a rethink. I shall explain what you advised to my hubby when he comes in.
Thanks again for the help.0 -
if your DD pc has win98 on it, then upgrading to win2k would be the best option.
ps,
charges are approx 40/80 quid for installing an OS and connecting
to the router/network.Get some gorm.0 -
Before you do anything find the 98 key she already has and write it down and keep it safe.

If you only want to use the 98 for net access and word processing it will be fine, depending on why it is playing up.
Just reformat and reload 98, the only hard part is making sure you have all the 98 drivers for the hardware.
A reformat may sort the issues out if it is software but if it's hardware I would buy a new XP PC and avoid VISTA at the moment.
MAKE SURE IF YOU DO REFORMAT YOU HAVE SAVED ANY IMPORTANT DATA.0
