laptop frequently freezing up

I have seen freezing issues with older laptops and cheap SSDs with controllers that are as weak as water. Don't rule the SSD out just yet, put in the new RAM and try the hard drive and see if it keeps on freezing. Maybe it will, maybe it won't - but an hour or two of testing won't cost you much!
It could also be the memory which has already been thoroughly discussed. This is why I use Crucial's Memory Advisor Tool to verify that the memory is compatible.
I buy sets of RAM from eBay where I can see pictures of the memory sticks. This way I can usually see that the memory sticks match and not some random brands which can prove problematic in use.
As the old saying goes - buy cheap, buy twice.0 -
Try reverting back to the original hard drive. I had similar problems on two machines when upgrading to SSD. I removed the SSD and problems vanished for me.0

What gave you the idea that the OP is still suffering from the issue?
A cursory search will show that device suffers from freezing issues. Possibly connected with memory.0
