eBay wins, Paypal, LTSB Airmiles Duo

Options
Hi,

I've did a search on this forum before about paying for goods with credit cards, using Paypal.

I read some posts about not using AMEX, as users are charged in USD, eventhough the goods are in GBP?

Does it apply to American Express's Amex card only, or is it the same for LTSB's Airmiles Duo's Amex card?

Thanks.

  • It will be any american express card.

However, although you are billed in USD, paypal now refund you the estimated conversion fees straight away to your card. I often end up a few pence up on the deal! This is listed in small print when you select American Express.
  • Hi,
I am out of pocket paying with my Amex card. I only got one becaue I collect airmiles and I had to change to Lloyds Bank to benefit still with Airmiles. I now pay through their Mastercard, not as many miles but I am not out of pocket. I would stay well clear of paying with the card on this site.
  • Do you not receive a statement credit of the fee? - I have since they introduced this, it is usually for slightly more than I would have been out of pocket. This is a fairly new thing, within the last 3 months or so.

Simongregson, so you mean using the Amex card will actually make me 'better off'?

Just wanted to be clear - while Airmiles is of course a benefit, I wouldn't sacrifice cash for Airmiles - Airmiles if great but definitely not as helpful as real money!

I only use paypal for relatively small amounts, but my last £2.49 purchase worked out as £2.48 once the credit was applied. So I am a penny better off I guess!

I have pasted the relevant information straight from paypal below, it is on the 'add credit card' page. The bold is my addition.

"PayPal submits American Express transactions in USD, regardless of the currency of your transaction. If your payment or your card is not denominated in USD, we each apply currency conversion commission to the transaction. American Express will credit your American Express statement in an amount estimated to be at least equal to the fees applied to the transaction. We apologize for any inconvenience as we implement a new process to address this issue."

    Hey Simongregson,

You mentioned you have the credits back to your statement. Is your Amex an American Express issued, or a Lloyds TSB issued?

I am just wondering, as if it's Lloyds TSB issued, will the "American Express will credit...." also apply to a situation if Lloyds TSB is the issuer?

    Thanks!
  • Mine is an amex issued card. Best either check with paypal (email them) if you want to be sure, or donate a small sum to a charity via paypal or buy something cheap off ebay, then see if you get the credit.
