Had to use my barclaycard for emergency cash last night....

If I pay £50 off my balance today, will I incur fees, or will it now be 'trapped' until the 0% purchase balance until clear?

Comments

  • Payments go to the highest rate balance.

You'll be subject to whatever fees are on the account and daily interest until paid off.

How much cash did you take out? To be sure the interest will be paid too and not accumulate pay in more than you withdrew.
  • Payments will go to the highest rate balance at the time of the last statement, you will have to wait until your next statement arrives

Any other balance or spend on the card?
A lot will depend on that.
If it was @ a zero balance then. Make a payment to the card of the amount you withdrew. You will still incur a few pence interest for the next 3 months at worst.
If you have a balance already, then wait till it is statemented. If you do it before, that payment will go towards previous statement.
You will still have to pay interest on it.
And a cash withdrawal fee either way.

Paying off the full statement balance + the cash advance amount would also stop further interest accruing, wouldn't it?

you will still have a tiny bit of trailing interest between the statement generation and the date the payment goes in - once that is paid the following month then all is good

  • I think some of the posters missed your point about having a 0% purchase balance. You don't want to pay that down.

You are slightly trapped - interest is running on this withdrawal, but there is no way to pay it off until it has appeared on a statement. Send enough to cover the withdrawal as soon as it has appeared on the statement.

You will pay a fee and interest. No doubt they vary a bit between cards, but one Barclaycard I found online said they charge 3% (min £3) plus interest at 2.075%/month.

So on that basis, if you just missed a statement date, you will pay roughly £4.04 in total and possible a few pennies in trailing interest the following month. If you took the withdrawal just before a statement date and pay off just after, then you would pay nearer £3.

Since your £50 repayment will count towards the minimum for that month, it means you will get slightly more benefit from your 0% purchase deal. (Because you are effectively delaying paying down some of that balance.)
