Carpet underlay and gripper

Just priced a carpet with Carpetright and the underlay and gripper came to more than the carpet:confused:

Any ideas where I can buy both items at a realistic price?

Most internet companies in England do not deliver to NI:mad:

In my opinion you'd be better going to a smaller, local carpet firm, you should get better value on the underlay and gripper rods and that would make up for paying a bit extra for the carpet. You'll also get better quality in a lot of cases too.

I know someone in the flooring business and he wouldn't be a fan of Carpetright, Allied Carpets or any of the big chains.

I have done the same and I found the Martin Phillps was about £5 per metre ( there are different grades ) and the griper rods i got from B&Q also about a £5 for a pack. If you want to buy the metal strips for the doors also B&Q but DON'T buy the door size stripes as these are about £6 _ £7 buy the longer 2 metre stripes for about £9 and cut down.
If you need a carpet knee kicker these can be got in Argos for £29, cheaper can be got in B&Q but don't bother with them.

    Good luck
  • You can buy both on ebay:D
  • I used a company on ebay, phoned them up and done a great deal. I had the second best underlay for less than £2 a square metre, delivered. Carpertrights cheapest was £5.99. The rods etc can also be gotten from there.

  • The carpet underlay company funnily enough [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]01202 813000 is their number and if you tell them what you want etc they can do you a deal, not much haggling in their profits but next day delivery etc.

Don't skimp on the underlay, a chap, who worked for a carpet manufacturer, once told me that it was better to have a cheap carpet on a quality underlay than have an expensive carpet on a cheap underlay.

I would agree with this comment 100%. Been told this myself on a number of ocassions. I laid pretty cheap carpets in a previos house over good quality underlay and it was unbelieveable the difference it makes.
You pay for waht you get!! it's definatly worth forking out a bit more for good qualtiy underlay.

I totally agree but just because the big sheds charge a high price for underlay doesn't, necessarily, make it good;)

It is a question of getting the best product at the best price.......

I have to second the point re getting good underlay. The last time we bought carpet was 11 years ago for the stairs and landing. The carpet saleman recommended a quality underlay and further recommended we buy enough to put 2 layers on the stairs to keep the carpet good. The carpet fitter used some choice language ;) but it was an excellent job and the carpet still looks like new.

The only problem with this is I've gone off the carpet and DH won't let me buy another :o but I'm working on it :D
