Have you costed the attendance of the council out? Let's say 3 guys in a van attended.
3 guys earning, what 100 a day? That's 300 quid. Maybe more if they have significant training or expertise.
The van. Probably costs 120 quid a week on hire. Then it will have stuff like chapter 8 markings, beacons etc. Then all the tooling and equipment, some of it probbably quite specialised. There might be raw materials used in a repair. Disposal of waste, including permits for carrying the waste. Ppe for the people attending. Traffic management: Signage, cones, any temp traffic lights, diversions and the people to put them out, maintain them and remove them. Not knowing the incident and reponse required 6k is very easily achieve or more.

Do you think they went and bought all that kit especially for the OP's accident?:rotfl:

Nope, but having experience in running things like this I do know it ain't free. They did, however buy it for situations just like this. It all needs paying for. Did you think it was free?:rotfl:

And don't you think that much of that equipment will get used tens if not hundreds of times on similar incidents? The actual cost will be minimal.

Anyway I suspect it would be an interesting read if the OP put in a Freedom of Information request to the council asking for a full breakdown of the costs of the incident.

It'd be refused as commercially sensitive, not least because it's almost certainly outsourced.

Absolutely! Most roads authorities will have a limited amount of in-house traffic management equipment and what they have will be almost fully-used for planned road works. So for unplanned needs, they will go to a commercial traffic management company, who will naturally charge higher rates for emergency call-out.
