The OP could argue he thought it a reasonable offer in the circumstances i.e. buying an overpriced car from a dealer and being offered a sweetener, like with the scrappage schemes, to seal the deal.petethechin wrote: »I remember the dealer saying me 'so you are paying 5K cash deposit then', I said no I am paying £500 deposit to which he replied 'ok, 5K for your car and £500 deposit then', I was like yes ok.
He ran over the pre-agreement paperwork with me with those figures, we signed the HP agreement digitally on santanders website after going through the figure again.
It wasn't a typo, he seemed to genuinely believe my car was worth 5K. He didn't even look at the thing, just took the reg and I answered some questions about it.
The documentation I have which says 5K for my car is as follows:
A HP quote
A pre-contract credit information
A purchase invoice for my old BMW
A part-exchange sales invoice
A signed HP credit agreement.0 -
It is in the nature of car sales that the process is so far from transparent, with a range of deals, offers, “scrappages”, other inducements, finance packages and additional charges to be added, that it might be hard for a dealer to realistically argue in court that the average buyer was on an equally informed footing as the sales professional.0

How often have we bought a car and when looking at figures dealer has said that they are different to what was offered. But add up to the same.
It's just to help them fiddle the figures....Life in the slow lane0 -
They agreed to it, surely it's their fault if they feel they gave you too much in the price. You did not mislead them or give false information by the sounds of it?
Dealers can make all sorts of offers in order to get your sale and the offer does not always correspond to actual value. For example I was looking at buying a new car and my old car was worth nothing, like worth a couple hundred pounds. it was a rusty dented sh!tbox that was set to fail its MOT. One dealer offered £4000 for it to try and get me on to their finance for the new car.
They give you all sorts of misleading prices.0 -
I got £600 part ex for my old car once but the dealer wrote the balance due for the new car on the invoice as £600 less. The part ex car wasn't even mentioned, all very dodgy.0
