Hermes proof of delivery was forged photo!

I ordered a parcel from Zalando, which was a Christmas present for my husband. I got a message saying Hermes would deliver in the next few hours. I opted, foolishly, for them to leave the parcel in my porch, and signed, doubly foolishly, a declaration saying I would accept responsibility for it.
The thing is, the whole time I was sitting at my pc literally a few feet away from my front door, but if I had gone to the loo or something, when they called, I might have missed the delivery.
Almost as soon as I had returned the declaration, I got an email up on my screen saying it had been delivered! Well, I knew it hadn't because I can hear anyone approaching. The email from Hermes included photographic "proof" of delivery, which was a photo of a Zalando parcel sticking out of a letterbox but it was not my letterbox or my front door! I went out and looked at all the letterboxes around but nobody else had that type of door.
To make matters worse, I contacted Zalando who sent me a declaration to sign saying I had not received the parcel. But the thing is they insisted I had to send a copy of my passport! I rang them and asked why, and they said it "was in case they need to contact the police". Why on earth would the police want my passport (I'm a UK Citizen since birth). This whole thing has freaked me out. If I could get someone to come and look at my front door they would see it was not the one in the photo. But I am also worried now about ID theft, especially if Zalando send my passport to Hermes.
I am in a bit of a state about the whole thing and I don't know what action to take. If I go to the police are they actually going to do anything about the theft of a parcel? And is Zalando breaking EU laws about photos and personal data, over my passport?

  • The mention of police etc is probably to discourage scammers, and I doubt they'd send your passport to Hermes - it'll be literally just so they can verify your identity and keep an eye on future claims (if you keep claiming this is happening).

FYI you didn't need to send them your passport photo - they've not no real need to ask for this, and you're entitled to the goods you've ordered regardless of their 'process'.

There's a lot in life worth getting in a state about, but I'd say this isn't one of them - save the blood pressure for when something really goes wrong. :)
    Good luck.
