Limits of Liability

Long story short:
White & Co PLC tasked by the contract holder for the MoD (Agility) destroyed my stored furniture (Heavy 2 piece suite on its end so bowed frame and also covered in mould) whilst I was deployed overseas. My own insurance won't cover this so I'm having to either claim through their (White & Co) insurance in which they've stated their limits of liability at £40 per item which seems grossly unfair, or take them to the small claims court.
What are my options and is what I am told correct?

Insurance is not usually part of the deal when taking our container storage. In fact its made very clear that you need to arrange your own cover. As your situation sounds slightly different whats your contract with them say?

It's suggested by JSP800 (Joint Service Publication) but not directed to have your own insurance in place for removals and storage at public expense when you are posted elsewhere. As far as I'm aware I signed to say I've got something in place but realise years down the line that I didn't do it properly so my cover never changed from contents to storage.
Surely this doesn't allow them the right to just deny negligence here?0 -
What does the contract you signed say?0
