Not that it's a big deal. I simply restart the PC and the problem is usually resolved. It's just that it's just happened to me now and as i'm waiting on a bank live chat person getting back in touch i thought i'd ask.
Start the PC up, open a mp3, open a Youtube video, basically anything that should produce sound & there's nothing. Crank the speakers up - nothing. This is after the PC has literally just started up.
Restart the PC - problem solved.
Doesn't happen all the time, but happens. Ideas?
If you need more info in order to be able to identify the cause then just ask for whatever you need to know.

Check the volume mixer, see what the default speaker is.
Sometimes if you connect a screen/TV with an HDMI cable it defaults to that as default speaker.
How are the speakers connected anyway?0

I sometimes find that when that happens on one of my machines, there is a driver update waiting to install.0

The monitor is connected via HDMI, yes.
The speakers are connected via some thin wire in to a green port at the back of the PC.
