Moving in with Parents.

Hi all.

I'm moving back into my parents bungalow, my dad is disabled and my mum is his carer.

They seem to think i will be charged rent and council tax for living with them.

I'm not on the rent book.

Can anybody confirm that it will just be council tax or something different?

Thanks.

  • Hi, if they are on certain benefits and not eligible for rent/council tax but you work...then yes, that may affect their entitlement so you will have to help them out.

They don't pay rent or council tax themselves as the government pays it.

My dad is retired and disabled and my mum is his carer.

OP, it depends on what benefits they receive and on their age. It's possible that their Local Housing Allowance (LHA) will be reduced (what is known as a 'non-dependent deduction') when you move in with them (the amount will depend on your income) but as I say, it will depend on their circumstances. As for Council Tax- it depends on the LA's local Council Tax Reduction scheme (they're all different).

May I suggest you obtain advice specific to your circumstances before you move in with them? Your local Citizens Advice is probably your first port of call (or the LA if they have a decent and knowledgeable customer services team in their benefits department).

This. It's not a property issue as such.

Give them full details of the benefits being claimed, savings/investment held, income (yours and theirs) etc. Whether private or council housing etc.
