Fitting blinds

Im trying to fit some venetian blinds and its turned into an absolute nightmare.

Above the window there is a metal lintel. Ive only got about 2.5cm to play with before it hits the lintel, above the lintel i can feel electrical cables.

Ive tried to fix to just the plasterboard but the plugs or screws are now pushing the whole of the top of the recessed window down as its obviously pushing against the lintel.

How the !!!! am i supposed to fit centre supporting brackets to the top of the window? I am absolutely at my wits end.

  • Also it feels like there is electrical cable above the lintel (theres a couple of holes in the lintel for some reason and i poked a screwdriver through, but not where i need to fix a bracket unfortunately), pretty sure its electric cables.

As they are veneitan blinds, are you fixing inside the window recess.

Do the brackets have an option to fix on the side? ie you drill/screw horizontally on the left and right walls inside the recess at the top.

Ive received some mail order blinds yesterday and there is a left and a right bracket that has holes in both the top and the sides and instructions say I can use either.

  • inside the recess yes, ive got a good fix on them brackets to the side wall but i need to fit supporting centre brackets at the top of the recess which is where the lintel is.
  • Would fitting a length of wood to the top of the window recess work using some kind of glue? i could still fix the brackets to the edge of the wood against the wall to provide some support in the corners.

Drill ⅛" (3mm) holes in the lintel & screw into that.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • not keen on drilling into lintel at all, for a start there is electrical cables on top of it.

Instead of fitting to top of recess, could you fit a correct length of wood to the window facing edge of each side bracket, then fix side brackets.

You could then fit centre bracket, or fit it on the window facing side of wood first, depending on available space.

Sorry not very clear, but I've got it pictured in my mind.

You might want to paint the wood first.
  • well my plan was to use glue to stick the window to the top of the recess, then use the brackets the blinds sit in and form a join between the wood and the sides of the window recess using the blind brackets, to provide support at each edge of the window frame, then hopefully the wood wont bow in the middle over time. I just cant fix anywhere at the top of the recess at all, the lintel is there.
  • Hi,

is it a long heavy blind, do you really need the centre support?

Try these if it's the empty space between the plasterboard and the lintel.

It seems that have to be at least ~15 mm from the edge/corner.

That said, I've never used them and prefer DIY wooden plugs + PVA, but this requires some skill.
